The Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) is a premier autonomous research institution under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. With a distinguished legacy spanning over 181 years, IIG has played a pioneering role in the development of geomagnetism and allied geophysical sciences in India.

Established as an autonomous institution in 1971, IIG has evolved from a data collection organization into a globally recognized research institute conducting advanced studies in geomagnetism, space physics, atmospheric sciences, seismology, and allied Earth system sciences. The institute manages a network of geomagnetic observatories and research facilities across India and actively collaborates with national and international scientific organizations.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Earth Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Geophysics, or related disciplines.
  • Significant post-doctoral research experience.
  • Original and high-quality published research contributions.
  • Evidence of scientific excellence through recognitions such as:
    • Fellowship of national/international academies
    • National or international scientific awards
    • Other distinguished professional recognitions

Required Experience

Candidates must possess:

  • Extensive post-doctoral research experience.
  • Proven administrative and leadership experience commensurate with Pay Level-15 positions under the Government of India.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should:

  • Demonstrate outstanding scientific leadership in a reputed research institution or university.
  • Have an excellent publication record in internationally reputed peer-reviewed journals.
  • Possess expertise in geomagnetism, geophysics, space sciences, or allied disciplines.
  • Have experience in managing multidisciplinary research programmes and large scientific teams.
  • Be capable of mentoring scientists, researchers, and technical staff.
  • Be familiar with Government of India procedures, DST guidelines, and research administration.
  • Candidates employed in Government, Autonomous Bodies, or Public Sector organizations should apply through the proper channel or produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) at the time of the interview.
