Organization Profile: The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India operates the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) as an independent institution. It was incorporated in 1946 under the Societies Registration Act of 1850 as the Maharashtra Association for the Cultivation of Science (MACS). Subsequently, the MACS-Agharkar Research Institute received a distinct character as its research activities began to grow. In 1992, the institute was renamed as ARI in memory of its late founder, Professor S. P. Agharkar. The six themes that comprise ARI’s present research and development efforts are Biodiversity & Paleobiology, Bioenergy, Bioprospecting, Developmental Biology, Genetics & Plant Breeding, and Nanobioscience. These themes cover all fields of the life sciences. The institute features a guest house, a student hostel, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and a notable faculty.
