Gauhati University, established under the Gauhati University Act of 1947, began functioning on 26 January 1948 as an affiliating, teaching, and residential university in Guwahati. The first Vice-Chancellor was K. K. Handique, supported by Phanidhar Dutta (Registrar), Sailandhar Rajkhowa (Treasurer), and Sarat Kumar Dutta (Secretary of University Classes).

The University’s emblem, designed by T. Mukherjee, features the Sanskrit motto “Vidyaya Sadhayeta” meaning achievement through learning. Today, Gauhati University stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions in Northeast India, known for its academic excellence, research culture, and legacy of educational leadership.
