In order to serve as an institute of excellence for learning and research in the fields of insurance, pensions, and related fields, the Ministry of Finance of the Government of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, General Insurance Corporation of India, The New India Assurance Company, National Insurance Company, United India Insurance Company, and The Oriental Insurance Company jointly established NIA on December 16, 1980 in Mumbai.On June 4, 1990, the Academy relocated to Pune, where it now had access to cutting-edge research and learning facilities.
