Punjabi University, Patiala, was established under the Punjab Act No. 35 of 1961 by the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The foundation stone was laid by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, on June 24, 1962. At that historic moment, Dr. Radhakrishnan emphasized that institutions of higher learning are entrusted with the noble responsibility of nation-building by fostering a strong, free, and democratic India. 

Punjabi University, which officially came into existence on April 30, 1962, in the erstwhile princely state of Patiala, was founded with a core objective: to promote the Punjabi language, literature, and culture. Over the decades, it has evolved into a center of excellence, providing education across diverse disciplines.
