About Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) grew out of the educational and social reform work of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who recognized the importance of modern education and the development of educational opportunities for the Muslim community in the aftermath of the Indian War of Independence of 1857.

With the support of individuals including Raja Jai Kishan, Sir Syed worked toward establishing an institution that would promote education, particularly in English language and Western sciences. Over the years, the institution developed into Aligarh Muslim University, a prominent university in India.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates applying for the Guest Teacher position should possess the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed.
  • The Master’s degree should be in the concerned, relevant or allied subject from an Indian University or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
  • Candidates should have qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or CSIR, or a similar test accredited by the UGC, such as SET.
  • Candidates who have been awarded a Ph.D. degree in accordance with the applicable UGC regulations may be exempted from the NET/SET requirement, subject to the prescribed conditions.

Ph.D. Candidates Registered Before July 11, 2009

Candidates registered for a Ph.D. programme before 11th July 2009 may be governed by the applicable provisions existing at the time of their registration and may be exempted from NET/SET, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed conditions.

These conditions include:

  • The Ph.D. degree must have been awarded in regular mode.
  • The Ph.D. thesis must have been evaluated by at least two examiners.
  • An open Ph.D. viva voce must have been conducted.
  • The candidate must have published two research papers based on the Ph.D. work, with at least one paper published in a refereed journal.
  • The candidate must have presented at least two papers based on the Ph.D. work at conferences or seminars sponsored, funded or supported by UGC, ICSSR, CSIR or a similar agency.

The fulfilment of these conditions must be certified by the Registrar or Controller of Examinations of the concerned university.

NET/SET may also not be required for certain Master’s programmes in disciplines for which NET/SET is not conducted by UGC, CSIR or a similar UGC-accredited test.

Foreign University Ph.D. Qualification

A Ph.D. degree obtained from a foreign university/institute may qualify for exemption where the institution is ranked among the top 500 in the world university rankings by any one of the following:

  1. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
  2. Times Higher Education (THE)
  3. Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Emoluments

The selected Guest Teacher will receive:

₹1,500 per lecture, subject to a maximum of ₹50,000 per month.
