About IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
The Indian School of Mines was formally opened on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India, with an initial focus on developing trained manpower for mining activities and disciplines such as Mining and Applied Geology.
In 1967, it was granted deemed-to-be-university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The institution has subsequently expanded its academic and research activities and is now known as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
Research Project
The JRF position is under the project titled:
“Development of Innovative Extraction Method for Safer Extraction of Coal Seam by Underground Method with Higher Productivity and Percentage of Extraction using Continuous Mining System”
The project involves research associated with underground coal mining, safer extraction methods, productivity and extraction percentage using continuous mining systems.
Job Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be required to undertake several research and field-based activities, including:
- Frequent field investigations at different underground coal mines
- Data collection and site investigations
- Spending approximately 10–15 days at each mine site
- Numerical simulations
- Data analysis
- Preparation of research reports
- Preparation and publication of research papers
- Other project-related activities as required
The position therefore involves both field investigation and computational/research work.
Essential Qualification
Candidates should possess one of the following qualifications:
Engineering Qualification
- B.E./B.Tech. in Mining Engineering
OR
- B.E./B.Tech. in Civil Engineering
Postgraduate Qualification
Candidates with any of the following are also eligible:
- M.Sc. in Mining Engineering
- M.Sc. Tech. in Mining Engineering
- M.Tech. in Mining Engineering
- M.Tech. in Geotechnical Engineering
- M.Tech. in Geology
- M.Tech. in Applied Geology
- M.Tech. in Engineering Geology
- M.Tech. in Geological Technology
- M.Tech. in Tunnelling & Underground Space Technology
- M.Tech. in Rock Engineering and Underground Structures
Mandatory Examination Qualification
Candidates must have qualified GATE or CSIR-UGC NET.
Desirable Qualification
The following qualifications and skills are desirable:
- M.E./M.Tech. in relevant specializations related to:
- Mining
- Rock Mechanics
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Allied fields
- Knowledge of underground coal mining
- Knowledge of numerical simulation software such as:
- FLAC3D
- 3DEC
Fellowship
The selected JRF will receive:
₹37,000 per month + admissible HRA
The advertisement specifies that HRA is applicable in case hostel accommodation is not available.
Project Tenure
The tenure of the project is:
12 months
or co-terminus with the project, whichever is earlier.
