Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has invited applications for an ANRF-Junior Research Fellow (ANRF-JRF) position under a research project focused on advanced lithium-ion battery technology for next-generation electric vehicles. About IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

The Indian School of Mines was formally opened on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India, with the objective of developing trained manpower for the country’s mining sector. Initially, the institute focused on Mining and Applied Geology.

In 1967, the institution was granted deemed-to-be-university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Since its establishment, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has significantly expanded its academic and research activities and has developed into a comprehensive technology education and research institute.

Research Project

The selected Junior Research Fellow will work on the project titled “Deployment of Friction-Stir-Welded Al–Cu Interconnects for Shape Engineered Structural Li-ion Battery Packs for Next-Generation Electric Vehicles.”

The project has a tenure of three years, and the selected candidate may be permitted to enrol for a Ph.D. as per the rules and regulations of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

Job Description

The JRF will contribute to the development and characterization of friction-stir-welded lithium-ion battery modules designed for electric vehicle applications. The work will involve synthesis and characterization of battery-related materials, electrochemical testing, microstructural analysis, and evaluation of the electrical and thermal performance of welded joints.

The candidate will conduct laboratory experiments, analyse research data using scientific software, maintain research records, and assist with prototype fabrication and validation.

Prior experience with electrochemical techniques such as CV, EIS, GCD, and LSV, along with nanomaterial synthesis and advanced characterization techniques including XRD, FESEM, XPS, TEM, FTIR, and TGA, will be advantageous.

Strong research aptitude, teamwork, documentation skills, and scientific writing ability are expected from candidates.

Essential Qualification

Candidates should possess a postgraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, or Computer Science, or an M.Sc. in Chemistry, Material Science, Nano Technology, or Energy Sciences.

Candidates with a Graduate or Postgraduate Degree in a professional course selected through recognized national-level eligibility or selection processes may also be eligible. The selection routes include:

  • CSIR-UGC NET, including Lectureship/Assistant Professorship, and GATE.
  • National-level examinations conducted by Central Government departments, agencies, and institutions such as DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MoE, ICAR, ICMR, IITs, IISc, IISERs, NISER, and similar organizations.

Desirable Qualification

M.Tech./Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, or Electronics, or M.Sc./Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Energy Sciences, or allied fields will be desirable.

Candidates should preferably have knowledge of energy storage materials, lithium-ion batteries, electrocatalysis, supercapacitors, and electrochemical characterization techniques.

Fellowship

The selected Junior Research Fellow will receive:

  • ₹37,000 per month during the first two years.
  • ₹42,000 per month during the third year, subject to successful assessment.

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will be informed about the interview date. Mere possession of the minimum educational qualification does not guarantee an interview invitation. Candidates will be shortlisted based on merit and the requirements of the research project.

Candidates attending the interview must make their own arrangements for accommodation and travel, if required. No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview.
