The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS), Sarnath, Varanasi, has invited applications for Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor and BRA Research Professor positions across various academic departments. Educational Qualification & Experience
Professor
Professor-level eligibility varies according to the department and applicable regulations.
For several Professor posts, candidates should have a Ph.D. in the concerned/allied/relevant discipline, high-quality published research, at least 10 research publications in peer-reviewed/UGC-listed journals, a research score of 120, and normally 10 years of teaching or equivalent research experience, along with evidence of guiding doctoral candidates.
An alternative route is provided for outstanding professionals holding a Ph.D. in a relevant/allied/applied discipline with significant documented contributions and 10 years of experience.
For Professor – Sowa-Rigpa, the qualification includes Menpa Kachupa or a Bachelor’s Degree in Sowa-Rigpa from a recognized university/institute, with Menrampa or postgraduate qualification desirable, along with valid registration. The required experience varies depending on whether the candidate possesses a postgraduate or undergraduate qualification.
For Professor – Tibetan Traditional Painting, candidates may qualify through the academic/research route or through the specified traditional/professional artist route, which includes relevant artistic achievements, teaching ability and recognized artistic credentials.
Associate Professor
Generally, Associate Professor applicants should have:
- Ph.D. in the relevant discipline
- Master’s Degree with at least 55% marks
- Minimum 8 years of teaching/research experience equivalent to Assistant Professor
- At least 7 research publications
- Research score of 75
Specific departments have additional requirements. For example, Dictionary and Translation positions require relevant expertise in Tibetan/Sanskrit and experience in editing, restoration or translation of Buddhist philosophical texts.
For Associate Professor – Educational Studies, the qualification includes a postgraduate degree in Sciences/Mathematics/Social Sciences/Commerce/Languages, M.Ed., Ph.D. in Education and 8 years of teaching experience in a teacher education institution.
Assistant Professor
For several Assistant Professor positions, candidates should have:
- Master’s Degree with 55% marks in the concerned subject
- NET conducted by UGC/CSIR or SLET/SET, or Ph.D. as specified under the applicable UGC regulations
- Candidates with qualifying Ph.D. from specified foreign universities may also be eligible under the notification.
Subject-specific qualifications apply to disciplines such as Mool Shastra, Sampradaya Shastra, Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, History, Political Science, Tibetan Language & Literature and others.
For Sowa-Rigpa Assistant Professor, candidates require Menpa Kachupa or a Bachelor’s Degree in Sowa-Rigpa, valid registration and a minimum of two years’ professional experience. The age should not exceed 45 years at first appointment.

BRA Research Professor Recruitment
The BRA Research Professor is a tenure post for 5 years. The upper age limit is below 65 years. Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Sanskrit Buddhist Studies, Tibetan Studies or Sanskrit, high-quality publications, at least 10 research publications, a research score of 120 and at least 10 years of teaching/research experience with evidence of guiding doctoral candidates. Erudition in Sanskrit with knowledge of Bhoti and English is required.
