IIT (ISM) Dhanbad Recruitment 2026 invites applications for ANRF Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in natural hydrogen mapping, geoscience and AI. Apply online and by email by 26 August 2026.

Post Date: 15 August 2026

Organization: Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad

Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has invited applications for an ANRF-Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position under a research project focused on mapping and characterizing natural hydrogen hotspots in India using geoscientific datasets and artificial intelligence technology. Eligible candidates with relevant postgraduate qualifications in geophysics, geology, petroleum exploration, or earth sciences can apply before 26 August 2026.

About IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

The Indian School of Mines was formally opened on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India, to address the country’s need for trained manpower in mining-related activities. The institution initially focused on Mining and Applied Geology.

In 1967, the Indian School of Mines was granted deemed-to-be-university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Since then, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has expanded considerably in terms of academic programmes, research activities, and technological education.

Research Project

The JRF will work under the project titled “Natural Hydrogen hotspots mapping and characterization in India through the lens of geoscientific data, and artificial intelligence technology.”

The project aims to integrate geoscientific information and modern artificial intelligence techniques to identify and characterize areas with potential natural hydrogen resources in India.

The position is purely temporary and co-terminus with the project. The sanctioned project duration is two years or until the project ends, whichever is earlier. Selected candidates may also be considered for admission to the Ph.D. programme at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, subject to institute rules and eligibility requirements.

Job Responsibilities

The selected Junior Research Fellow will primarily contribute to natural hydrogen mapping and characterization by integrating remote sensing, geological, and geophysical datasets.

The responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting geological and geophysical field surveys.
  • Collecting samples and conducting experimental analysis.
  • Processing and interpreting geoscientific data.
  • Supporting geological and geophysical modelling activities.
  • Applying artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to geoscience datasets.
  • Preparing research reports, technical documents, and scientific articles.
  • Participating in project-related laboratory and field activities.
  • Performing other research work assigned by the Principal Investigator.

The position requires candidates with strong research aptitude and an interest in interdisciplinary applications of geoscience and artificial intelligence.

Essential Qualification

Candidates should possess any of the following qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in Applied Geophysics
  • M.Sc. Tech. in Applied Geophysics
  • M.Tech. in Applied Geophysics
  • M.Sc. in Applied Geology
  • M.Sc. Tech. in Applied Geology
  • M.Tech. in Applied Geology
  • M.Sc./M.Tech. in Petroleum Exploration
  • BS-MS in Earth Science
  • Equivalent relevant degree

Candidates should have secured 60% marks or above or equivalent CGPA.

Applicants must also have qualified GATE or CSIR-UGC NET.

Desirable Qualification

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience or knowledge in geological and geophysical modelling, field surveys, and AI/ML applications in geoscience.

Experience with remote sensing, geological datasets, geophysical interpretation, computational modelling, or machine learning applications related to Earth sciences may be beneficial for the project.

Fellowship

The selected JRF will receive a fellowship of ₹37,000 per month plus HRA, as per IIT (ISM) Dhanbad norms, in cases where hostel accommodation is not available.

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will be informed through email, tentatively by 27 August 2026, regarding the interview. The interview may be conducted in online or offline mode.

Mere possession of the minimum educational qualification does not guarantee an invitation to the interview. Candidates will be shortlisted based on merit and the requirements of the research project.
